CarpentryCon 2020
Growing Inclusive, Computational Communities and Leaders
29 June - 1st July, 2020
University of Wisconsin - Madison, USA
  • What are The Carpentries and CarpentryCon?

The Carpentries is a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives teaching foundational computational and data science skills to researchers. CarpentryCon is the key annual community-building and networking event.

  • When and where will CarpentryCon 2020 be held?

CarpentryCon 2020 will be held from June 29 - July 1st, 2020, at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, United States. The city of Madison is sandwiched between two freshwater lakes, features an iconic state capitol building in the city center, and is a short trip from several other large US cities (Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis). The University of Wisconsin - Madison sits along the shores of Lake Mendota, including a student union with a lakeside terrace.

CarpentryCon2020 will be supported by a growing local community of instructors, coordinated through UW-Madison’s Data Science Hub.

We are very grateful for the generous support of the University of Wisconsin - Madison in hosting this event. To help make this a truly international event, we will be offering travel support to facilitate attendance from as wide a group as possible.

  • What is the theme of CarpentryCon 2020?

The theme of the CarpentryCon 2020 conference is: "Growing inclusive, computational communities and leaders".

  • Will I fit in?

We are working hard to ensure that CarpentryCon 2020 is accessible as possible and that everyone feels welcome. At the registration stage, there will be plenty of space for you to tell us about any special needs we need to accommodate, whether they be around childcare, mobility, dietary preferences, or anything else that you need us to take into account to make CarpentryCon 2020 work for you. Attendees must also be prepared to abide by our Code of Conduct.

Conference format

We will offer a series of practical, hands-on skill-ups, workshops and breakout sessions to teach essential skills around coding, leading projects, community organisation, curriculum development and other professional development 'must-haves'.

Networking events

There will be a series of social and other events, including a poster reception and a dinner, and other events to foster networking, especially among instructors who might want to share workshop and teaching tips. Attendees will have lots of opportunities to come together informally to share stories about challenges and successes.

Community building

Member organisations, local champions, Carpentries' advocates, and staff will talk about ways to build communities all around the world. Hear from local champions about tried and tested methods for building strong local communities. Pitch your own community building ideas for discussion in CarpentryCon's 'unconference' section.

CarpentryCon 2020 Sponsorship

CarpentryCon 2020 planning is underway. It will only be possible with the generous support of businesses and foundations who support our mission of teaching foundational computational and data science skills to researchers to safeguard the future of sound, open, reproducible science.

Why sponsor CarpentryCon 2020?

CarpentryCon 2020 is the key networking and community-building event of The Carpentries. Some of the brightest and most promising researchers and data scientists from around the world will meet to network, to learn about digital research tools, and the practice of reproducible, open science, and to further develop the coding, communication and project management skills research and industry are crying out for.

Without the support of sponsors who share our vision, we will not be able to deliver the event our community needs.

  • Help us keep registration costs low so people aren't priced out of attending
  • Help us maximise participation by people from diverse geographies and communities, including the global South
  • Help us provide travel scholarships to allow as wide an audience as possible to attend

By supporting us, you will help skill up the next generation of research leaders, people who will attend CarpentryCon 2020 to develop the skills needed to lead 21st century research, whether that be in academia or industry. This is a perfect opportunity to promote your products and services to these research leaders of the future. In return, we can promise you a number of benefits.

Your name, your product, your service can all be part of our event marketing. Get your logo on our website, our T-shirt, our poster, our conference slides, and on all our promotional materials, including social media and email channels. Leading sponsors will get conference time to air their messages, and will be able to send targeted emails to all delegates.

We will provide exhibition space to allow you to showcase your offerings and network with delegates during CarpentryCon 2020. You can demo products or services, give away swag, and start some great conversations.
